NI's First Couple On Top of the World
Long-time Ulster Cancer Foundation supporters Lynne and Noel Hanna are on top of the world today as they become Northern Ireland's first married couple to summit Everest.
Lynne and Noel, from Dromara, made history today when they became the first married couple from Northern Ireland to reach the summit of Everest. The couple are using their Everest climb to raise £150,000 for the Ulster Cancer Foundation's Personal Everest Project. Lynne, General Manager for Clarins and Noel, a seasoned endurance athlete and expedition organizer, reached the summit at 12.26pm today, led by legendary Russian climber and guide Nicholay Cherhy. They shared the summit – the highest point on the planet - with fellow climber, Canadian Patrick Singh and Russian guide, Maksim Bogatirev. Joyce Savage, Head of Appeals & Marketing, Ulster Cancer Foundation said, "This is a tremendous achievement and we send our heartiest congratulations! We have been eagerly following their progress and we've been in regular contact with them as they charted every step of their climb for us. "We shared in their frustration as they had to postpone their summit attempt last year due to China closing all routes to Everest and when the weather hampered the start of their climb this year. Their remarkable achievement has been the culmination of many months of rigorous training and we salute their fortitude and bravery. "Our thoughts stay with them as they begin the arduous trek back to base camp, which can be just as dangerous as the climb to the summit!" Everest is the highest mountain on earth standing at 8,850 metres above sea level. This expedition is Noel and Lynne's second attempt at reaching Everest's summit as a husband and wife team. In 2005, the couple made an attempt but Lynne abandoned her summit chance when Noel was diagnosed with retinal haemorrhaging causing blindness which lasted for six weeks. Noel did however return to Everest and reached the summit in April/May 2006 – on his return to Ireland he will begin plans to finish his world record bid for the fastest acent and descent of world's seven highest summits. www.7Summits2SeaLevel.com Lynne and Noel set off on their expedition on Tuesday 31st March 2009.
